Week in Review

Friday:  6pm Work

Saturday:  8am Bed.  10am Mom taken by ambulance to hospital.  Pancreatitis.  2pm Mom released from hospital.  6pm Work...

Sunday: 8am Bed.  10am Piercey to emergency room.  Febrile seizures.  3pm Piercey released from hospital.  9pm Piercey back to emergency room.  Seizure.

Monday:  1am Piercey released from hospital.  3-6am Sister (39 weeks pregnant) very sick with GI issues.  6am Sister hyperventilating.  7am Sister admitted to hospital.  Dehydration and baby check.   3pm Sister released from hospital.

Tuesday:  10am Mia home from preschool.  Diarrhea.  1pm Piercey to hospital.  EEG.  6pm Quiz for Women's health.  6:30pm Bed.  Nausea (me).

Wednesday:  4am Piercey to hospital.  MRI under general anesthesia.  11am Mom to outpatient facility.  Ultrasound.

Thursday:  10am Ali home from school.  Vomitting.  8pm Exam for Primary care.

Friday:  8am Kids home from school.  Sick day.  Mia tummyache.  6pm Work.

Updates:
 1.  Pierce appears to be fine.  He's acting normal and has had no more seizures.  He has barely had a fever through this whole ordeal.  Waiting on official reports from EEG and MRI.

2.  Mom has had her lab work repeated.  It's quite possible that the emergency room got a false reading and that she did not have Pancreatitis and instead had a severe GI bug.  Waiting on official report from ultrasound.

3. Sister is still pregnant and recovering from her severe GI bug.  It's amazing to me that the body knows that this is NOT a good time to go into labor.  She has dealt with some amazing stress the last few days and I pray that with some rest, baby Iris will come soon.  Midwife appointment on Tuesday.

4. Cuties seem to be recovering from their less-severe GI bug.  Eva (knock on wood) seems to be the only one not affected.  They are enjoying a day off watching movies and playing VSmile.  I am looking forward to a cuddly naptime.

5. I am blessed that my skills and chosen occupation benefit my family and that they seek my input and call on me in their time of need.  But my phone has been ringing off the hook!  I have barely slept in almost a week and have been worried SICK.  But I would catapult off the couch and spend the night in the emergency room, at my sister's house, or in Labor and Delivery all over again for my family.  Please pray my grades do not reflect the stress I have been under....

Call The Toothfairy!

Natalie has been wiggling this little tooth for a couple weeks

"Oh, would ya' just pull it out already?" Mom asks
"I'll do it Ali!" Mia offers
"Keep wiggling it! You can do it!" Daddy encourages
"Ahhhh dada Alll!"  Eva suggests

So the wiggling continues until...

This beautiful little smile that I love so much has a hole in it.
And I know it's just a tooth, but I can't help panicing a little.
Just like every "first" Ali has had and will have,
this just foreshadows what is to come...

Today it's a tooth.
Tomarrow it's a training bra.

But for now I will kiss this little face
that has one less tooth in it and divulge all I know about
The Toothfairy
and share in my daughter's
disapointment excitement
over the going rate for clean, baby teeth.

Happy Baby?

I promise that Evelyn is one of the happiest, dearest little girls you will ever meet!

Maybe that's why I can't get enough of this grumpy little "wrinkle face"! She loves to do this at me in her highchair- I think because it's usually followed by lots of giggles from her sisters (and Momma!).

At the fancy department store yesterday, Eva and I were babbling cheerily at each other when the elderly sales lady approached us and asked if she could help us... I'll admit, it was a bit awkward when my little sweetheart turned around and gave her the "wrinkle face"!

Ding-DONG!

Very welcoming front door.

Not so welcoming sign pasted over doorbell

I tried to soften the line under the capitalized "NOT"
with a cheery "Thanks" and exclamation mark,
but I think my borderline psychosis over the constant
ringing of the doorbell and resulting scream of a small baby girl
(resulting in the interruption of my very limited study time)
was apparent.
Both the solar screen installer-man and the UPS man
read the sign, set the package down,
and backed away slowly.

I Will Win You Over!

Hello Family and Friends!

Guess what?!  I am a huge supporter of the midwifery model of care!  Surprise!!

Okay, all kidding aside, I just wanted to share my belief that childbirth is a normal, healthy part of the lifecycle and not an illness that is complicated until proven otherwise!

April is Cessarean Awareness month and I want to encourage all my friends of childbearing age (and beyond) to seek out current information and make informed decsions regarding your health! Gone is the era of "Doctor Knows Best"!  I'm not saying you should totally disregard what your doctor tells you, but you shouldn't be afraid to ask "why?" or say "I don't agree and I'd like a second opinion".  Don't take a backseat when it comes to your health and your childrens' health.  Be proactive.

Knowlege is power! Don't be afraid to go against the norm!!  Listen to your instincts!!!

And that is enough of my feminist ranting encouragement for today.

And by the way, I am officially marketing myself as a doula.  Spread the word.

Love,
Your endearing and passionate student midwife friend,
Katie

Ladies Night

Did you see the commercials for Disney On Ice?  Yeah?  So did my Cuties....

So after several days of not so subtle hints from my big girls, I bought us a few tickets and set a "date night".

I remember date nights with my Dad when I was little.  I specifically remember wearing my cousin Dawn's fur coat and a black floral dress and going to have oysters on the half-shell at Shenanigan's.  We parked in a puddle and my Dad had to carry me into the restaurant so my patent leather shoes wouldn't get wet. I ordered "chicken oscar".  I must have been in second grade. Fond memories!

Now here I am twenty something years later, dressing up my "big"  little girls and going on a date!

We had chicken strips, broccoli and strawberry spinach salad at Cheddar's.  Oysters on the half-shell will have to wait for another time!  And of course we shared a monster cookie sundae for dessert.

Our budget-friendly tickets placed us up in row V in the upper balcony.
After looking around for a few minutes, Ali said:
"Mom?  We're in row V?  So those seats down by the ice must be row A?
Were they out of those seats or something when you bought our tickets?"
She would have preferred rink-side seats, obviously.

My Cuties are great company.
I can't wait for next time.

A Big Fan

Here's a girl after her Daddy's heart
(and her Grandpa's too!)

We call this look "wrinkle face" but for the purpose of this post, we'll call it her "game face".

Okay, she's done posing for photos.
She'd like to get back to advising Daddy on his basketball brackets.
